Have been looking at cars for the last couple of weeks to replace my ute, found what I think is a good offer last night.
It is a 2001 AU2 Fairmont, I dont think it has that many extras on a base fairmont though... Has some paint markings on the rear bumper - dealer says he can have it fixed (bumper repainted) for $120 Has 88000km's Warranty will be 5000km / 3 months on everything Extra warranty would be on Drivetrain for up to 180 000km,s on clock for the next 3 years can get full bumper to bumper to bumper for the next 3 years and up to 180 000 for an extra $1200 Price is 14k Will be going for a test drive on Saturday (couldn't get the car out last night) So does this offer sound about right? And would the extra warranty be worth it - I am guessing the main extra's it would cover would be braking system, suspesion / electrical etc. Also out of interest - does the CD player play MP3's? - question the dealer couldn't answer last night. Does anyone have a list of the base feature in these and extras that were available? |

That sounds like a pretty good price, have a look on the net and see what other cars the same are selling for. And I dont think the AU system played MP3's but I could be wrong

Bit rich if you ask me for an AU II.
If you have a look around the Net most AU II monts are around the 11 - 12 k mark, if i was going to spend 14 id want a GHIA or a XR6 VCT. Anthony is correct about the MP3s to, AU dont play them and neither does the BA/BF.

So I should offer about 12.5k, with the Bumper repair chucked in, if I do decide that I want this car?
Would the extra Warranty be worth getting? |

Well I have extended warranty on my BA Fairmont and in the last two weeks it has paid for itself. I think it is worth it.

Extended warranties with the right provider can be useful, but as whats already been said make sure you read the fine print.

Agreed.
You should be able to pick up a BA Futura with less then 60,000 on it for that price. Alloys, ABS, Cruise control, newer model etc. I wouldnt pay that for an AU II, and i wouldnt rush into anything.

Something like this would be a better option.
http://www.pickles.com.au/servlet/Au...m_id=502023385 Basically the same equipment levels as an AU II Fairmont, still got factory warranty till early next year. :

AU2 for $14k forget it - you can get a BA XT for $13K and up at auction with lowish kays.

yes something with factory warranty is worth getting. Auctions are the way to go for mainstream vehicles like fords, holdens and toyota's. Dirt cheap to buy as ex fleet cars.

The warranty is most certainly not worth it. The fineprint means that you pay $1200 for nothing. A friend was convinced into buying a 3 year 175,000km warranty and it covers sweet **** all.

Price seems a little high. Not knowing the prices in WA is a bit hard but if you can knock him down some it would be a great car. Had one before I bought the ute and absolutely loved it.

Does sound a bit high
With the extended warranties, the more km's the car has the more frequent the services has to be. I was out lookng at 2nd cars with some relo's a other week and their terms were that over 50,000km services were every 10,000km, and above 100,000, they were every 3,000. If they werent stamped with those intevals, warranty was void |

Thanks for the replies guys, Yeah I suppose we pay a bit more over here because it is a smaller market. I will not be getting the warranty anymore, but I will be looking at what comes standard with it to see exactly how much it covers.
Rapid XR8 - stop giving me ideas I am supposed to be paying off my homeloan not looking into mags and lowering for the car!! Your old 'mont looks great. I will offer 12k with 1.5k trade in on my old Ute (which I kinda want to get rid of before anything else goes wrong with it...) - that should be a decent enough offer from what I have heard here. |

Definatley way too high for base fairmont. Just sold my VCT ghia with black leather, 100k, liquid silver in mint condition for 10k. (to someone I knew though) but had it advertised for 2 months on car point and no takers at 12,500. Dont mess around with a std farimont when you can have a tickford for starters or go for a BA falcon. OR even a AU Fairlane for the same price.
BUT in saying all this yes you are in Perth so would be so different to here | [/url] |

My old man bought an AUIII Fairmont, 92ks, one owner, full service history, imac condition etc for 11 thou only a month and a half ago. For 14k if I was you i'd be expecting more for the money so i'd suggest keep looking but thats just my 2cents.

Just found another one to have a look at - 12k sticker price so price might be able to get beaten down a bit - with any luck closer to the 10k you guy's think it's worth. Still have to look at it though, again it seems to be a base model 2000' mont with 100,000 on the clock...

12.5k + on roads etc. Thanks for your help guys - I will post pics when I get some time... |

If its the better sound system it will have Premium Sound written on it and a Tape Deck, otherwise if its standard it will just have the six stacker (prestige).

I forgot to ask what colour you got. I actually prefer the SIII over the SII, its got the extra bits like the skirts, clear indicators and nicer wheels. Sounds like you got a pretty decent deal considering what the prices are like in WA.
Congrats!
