Default Charged $100 for answering your phone?

Just thought that we'd let you know about some dirty birds that are trying to dodge Melbournians out of some cash...

Keep an eye out for unusual calls to your mobile. We have already received a few of these calls on firm mobiles.

If you get a phone call or a missed call on your mobile from any of the numbers below; do not answer or return the call.

This is a scam for a competition whereby the caller is charged $100 for the call.

The list of phone numbers to be cautious of are:

(02) 8219 0500
(02) 8303 8320
(02) 8303 8321
(02) 8404 2201
(02) 8404 2203
(02) 8404 2213
(02) 8404 2215
(02) 8404 2235
(02) 8404 2236
(02) 8404 2245
(02) 8404 2296
(02) 8404 2298
(03) 8102 9565
(03) 8558 0556
(03) 8558 1441
(03) 8558 1442
(03) 8558 1443
(03) 8558 1444
(03) 8558 1445
(03) 8558 1446
(03) 8558 1447
(03) 9540 2950
(03) 9540 5100
(03) 9540 5101
(03) 9540 5187
(03) 9540 5189
(03) 9855 2913

Copied off the nova100.com.au web site, interesting to know i thought!!

Most probibily has been posted before, but its important for people to know because you answer 2 of these calls, and you are $200 out of pocket.

I got a missed call from (03) 8102 9563 on saturday afternoon while at the local footy. Didn't even ring for half a second. I don't return missed calls from unknown numbers anyway unless there's a voicemail message and it sounds important.

it only works if you RETURN the missed call. there is no such thing as being charged to answer a call that you receive.
this is why they only let the call ring for 1 ring, then hang up, hoping that you will ring them back, otherwise they wouldn't get anywhere making calls and hoping to get them answered on the first ring.
these bastards are also send SMS's to phone that are turned off, hoping that you will ring them when you turn the phone on and receive the message, so it doesn't matter if your phone is on or off.

also, you can add (02)8404 2207 to the above list.

BTW, the 'authorities' are onto this already, and some ***'s are going to feel the booting from hell over it, if you know what i mean...

I wonder what if you rang the number from a payphone

A lady said on Nova that she rang two numbers back, but I still fail to see how it can be a $100 local phone call? Does anyone have phone bill evidence?

Interesting none-the-less.

I've heard that they are Internet numbers and you get charged at a very high rate. The other one I've heard is that you get a message saying "you've won a prize - call ######## to collect" or something.

But yeah - you won't get charged for answering the call (you'd have to be pretty quick to). They're designed to go unanswered so you have to call back, and thus pay the charges involved.

It's pretty wide-spread. They're trying to track em down etc - however the prize one isn't illegal, because if you actually follow through to the end (and pay a lot of $ in the process) you get the cheap prize ...

Its okay guys stop stressing about this. The above list that cranners just posted was only an email that was doing the rounds. There is NO way that someone can set up phone numbers which charge a $100 connection fee. This is an urban myth that has been going around for a couple of years now. Just dont worry about it. Do a simple google search on this and you will see that its a load of rubbish!

Still a worthwhile warning I guess & cheers to cranners for posting.

Be interesting to see how something like this would have gone for this long though if true and hope the persons involved are invited to a butt-kicking festival where we all wear blundstones ;)

I got one the other week, i rang back, and it was some advertisement bullcrap. Then they rang me back later, asking for more so i told them to get stuffed. Then the other day after filling up the falcon, i wlaked in to pay and the teller lady had someone prank her with an out of state phone number, she rang back and told me about it when i went to pay. scamming peices of crap, the fact they can get away with it is ridiculous.

you dont get charged $100 for a return call, its normal charges as its a landline number, but they do ask you to ring a 190 number to claim a reward of $40 worth of ringtones, this is where they get you,it costs $3 a minute to ring the 190 number and about 5 mins to claim your prize code so thats $15 down the drain.

Yep, I've had that as well. I just hang up when I hear that.

Don't think I've had any of these calls yet, but a matter of time I suppose.

Mum might have had one the other day, she didn't know the number, and didn't call back.

Heh, i have one of those numbers in my missed call list on my phone atm (02) 8404 2298. I never return random missed calls anyway. I generally only return calls from people that i know, defenetly not random phone numbers from interstate etc, lol.

Exactly.

No $100 fees whether you answer it or call it back.. it's just a really tricky way to make you call a 190 number.

It's all over the net atm, and it's australia wide. They call random numbers, so noone has sold out any of your information.

It's operating from outside australia, and the AFP have apparently called on the FBI to help shut it down.

I'll find the detailed (and RELIABLE) link later and post it.. not at home atm.

On the topic of not answering numbers not known, do you guys answer private numbers at all?

Especially those annoying ones that ring twice or at like 4am lol

Woz, that number rang me earlier today and when I rang it back, there was something saying " are you ringing me back? good, you have just won blah blah blah..."

I hung it straight up but not sure about the bill- I was on hold with telstra for 15 mins and gave up.

I'd love 10 mins in a sound proof room with one of these pin dicks..... :MrT_anim:

The company running the "scam" as it is being called is a legitamite company and does actually give the advertised prizes out, so in all reality there is not alot that can be done to shut them down, its only shear ignorance of people ringing the 190 number that is making them any money at all.
