I have the same problem. My house on the central coast is a stinker cause the air-con has a leak. I am starting to think all air-con techies dont want to work. No-one wants to look at fixing it.

I dont understand how these tradesmen can survive. They always winge about business being slow but non of them answer their phone. They simply listen to the message left and only respond back to jobs that cost big dollars.

Bastards.

new installs bring more money than a regas ;) i gather at the current temperature there may be a few AC sales going at the moment and they probably take preference

call them out and pretend it's an installation job... when they arrive, explain it's only a regas ;)

What useually happens is that the calls all come in at the same time,
ie: christmas eve, I need it fixed today.
it does not work like that as we have regular customers to service,
So to look at thing in a respective point of view do I service a 1 time custumer over a regular customer that is my bread and butter.
quite often a little fore thought will go a long way between a new customer and a tradesman.

I am not being harsh but my family need to eat 52 weeks of the year not only when somebody decieded that they need there one of job fixed today.

Would a mechanic be able to do it?

I understand they are basically the same... but they need to be vacuumed and so on...

As for the trade’s men... yeah they stink... i too work for myself... and i would go for the one off customers because they pay for the privilege... they want it now they pay for it...

Trade always wants it faster and cheaper and you make less money!

I rendered the house a couple of months ago and they had to move the outside compressor fan box of the split system. Needless to say the r22 gas escaped into the ozone layer. I rang heaps of aircon people, No go.
I finally rang refrigeration mechanics and got quotes from $75 - $300 for a refill. I went with the cheap guy who vacuumed out the system and regassed 1.75kg of r22 for $75 last week. (Just in time as it's been over 42 for 3 days)
So look in yellow pages under Refrigeration mechanic.

I would be very careful how you word what happened there, its a $75000 fine for releasing Ozone Depletive Substances to atmosphere, and NO, a mechanic has no qualifications for Air Conditioning. You must be a licenced Refrig and A/C mech to be able to do it. Anybody else is open to very large fines under new federal legislation

Well, let me quantify. A Licensed refigeration mechanic was in charge of the whole procedure, both emptying (I wasn't there, so I thought it was just let out)and refilling of the aircon. However I was trying to help T2TL50 with the people to see to get his aircon refilled. I get your point. I should have been more specific in my details.

I had a whale beached on my air conditioner last week, noticed it while I was clubbing seals and poisoning trees. Eventually it got caught under the roller door, so I sold it to a Japanese whaling captain for 50 bucks. Spent the 50 bucks on getting my catalytic converter gutted and filled the car with avgas.

I love the environment.

One of the reasons I left this crap trade is the attitude displayed towards Refrig/Air cond techs shown in this thread.....

I'm getting a Slit-System installed tomorrow for my dad.
A 2.5 HP Kelvinator cost $899 cash and that's cheap plus installation cost of $500 and another $200 for electrical work.
Cheers John

Good to hear it's all sorted. We got our ducted evap cooler stuck in last week and it's awesome. First real test today. It got up to 36 and we had 25-26 inside not even pumped up. Makes you wonder how you survived without it doesn't it. An essential investment for any Aussie home if you ask me.

Depending on where you are the evaps are great for the dryer places...but where there is alot of humitidy then its reverse cycle.

Sorry what I meant to say was some form of cooling is essential not neccessarily evap. All I know I'm loving it and will have a monster of one in my own house when I move out. I think ours is 11kw and the biggest one in the range is 18kw.
