Default Gearbox Q..

hey all,

Just out of curiosity, will a T5 from an e-series go in and work fine in an AU?
I was told that they wouldnt, because the AU one is slightly longer than the E series.. or something to that effect, maybe different linkage length?

I have a feeling my gbox is having a slow and painful death, starting to make a funny whine, and goes all stiff when trying to shift.. sometimes wont slot into gear...
and yeah if im up for a new box would an e series one fit, or not?
mainly because i can get it exchanged for $565.. but they are e series boxes..

and are there any really differences in ratios?? or anything else i should know??

Get the same type of box.It has a unique ratio in it that gets it off the line harder than a au vct manual box ...If you dont ,you may lose some launching power.

they are different.. i dont think the ratios are different until the BA xr6T box but it is a physical difference that makes the AU and Eseries incompatable

I know that the auxr6 hp did get a better first gear than any other of the au range.My 3.73 diff ratio in my auto cannot beat its first gear which is standard.

ok, gave Malwood a call....

$2200 to have my T5 rebuilt into a Z spec T5, and also clutch diametre upgraded to a 10.5in plate.. works out $400 cheaper then having it rebuilt to a standard T5..
and its also the same box they use in the V8 brute utes..
But to go with this i NEED 3.9 diff gears to make it really work , either that or i get nearly 80-90km/h in 1st lol..
pricing seems alright.. i havent really got anything to compare it to..

lol so there is $3200 worth of gearbox and diff.. thats an expensive way to go about getting a few 10ths faster down the 1/4 LOL

The Mal Wood jobbie you have been quoted is the exact spec box OED666 has in his ED, although he has 4.11's his ED Futura with an XR cam was good for 14.7's @ Willowbank.. Dropped from 16.4 with the auto and 3.08 single spinner

Sorry to hijack the thread but how common are AU automatic boxes to pop?? Just wondering cause i read in the owners manual and it says that they dont really need "servicing". (What THEEEEEEEEEE). In reality how often should they be serviced?

No, it didnt. The XR6 HP manual gearbox is IDENTICAL in every way to every other AU manual I6 gearbox EXCEPT the VCT. It was the VCT that got the unique 1st gear. Forte and XR6 HP had a 3.35 first gear, VCT had a 3.05.

Oddly enough, there was even a ED XR6's had a 3.25 1st gear ratio (just to confuse it even more)

By the book.. new fluid every 50,000kms. They usually need a full rebuild around 200,000kms but it can vary quite a bit between different cars and drivers.

my auto box is shot. sometimes doesnt grab reverse straight away when doing like a 3 point turn, so i chuck it in reverse and give the gas a squirt, and like a fraction of a second later there is this big clunk as it like locks in and the wheels spin LOL kinda like D-slamming i guess, but in reverse!

Auto servicing depends on the type of driving you do.

My ute gets an auto service every 15,000-20,000km ... but i do heavy driving ... under load nad also towing ... gets driven everyday at least 150km per day.

An aftermarket oil cooler is a great investment for auto gearbox longevity too.

I have time where I take off on a COLD morning (just after i bought the ute) ... it would start in 1st gear in D ... then go to select 2nd ... but get nothing .. and just rev like it's in Neutral. The box needed warming up though ... and new fluid too.

I have done the odd R-slamming like HLC has mentioned ... on a very warm day and trying to do a 3-point turn ... it takes 2-3 seconds to select R after shifting quickly from D ... and I can vouch mucho smoke can be made this way too ... LOL.

My gearbox didn't like it very much though.

I am up to 140,000km now (bought it 6 months ago with 109,000km) ... and I am finding that there are little bits in the bottom on the gearbox pan everytime I change the fluid .. and the fluid is black/brown at 20,000km .... not a good sign at all.

I think my next autobox will be built stronger ... with a hi-stall ... and decent oil cooler installed.

My next option is a full flush of the current autobox and see if that makes things better ... I know the torque converter holds 2-3 litres of fluid that doesn't come out when the fluid is changed ... as old fluid is constantly being circulated around the auto all the time.

Tip if you get the auto rebuilt - Get a dipstick fitted (think an EF one fits) whilst it is out of the car. I had it done, now I can check fluid level and quality. Dealer servicing only looked at fluid level, didn't care the fluid was no longer red.

The HP is the better geared of course... but its the same as a forte gearbox too. The 3.35 first gear is the standard first gear across the AU range.
The VCT (and the V8's) had the unique gearing, not the HP.

Should read "Just get the standard I6 gearbox, it has the best first gear for take-offs"

No, it got the Forte gearbox ratios. The VCT and V8 got the taller 1st gears.

My bad...this book doesnt refer to the other cars in the range in that section...it is only part of the picture..true.

well the Z spec T5, has the same ratios as the V8.. the reason the 3.9 diff gears is needed..

yea, the z spec boxes have a 2.94 first gear, and i think the normal t5 either has a 3.3, or 3.5... so 3.9's will get your car launching nicely.

You could also ask for a taller 5th gear. Mines 0.63, the normal is 0.68. With 3.9's i was doing 1950rpm at 100km/h, and with 4.11's its doing 2050rpm at 100km/h.

You will still get to around 165km/h in 4th on the limiter, and you will easily lose your licence.

I've got a z spec in mine with standard xr6 ute diff (3.45 i think) and there's no way it will get anywhere near 80-90km in first. Wish it did though, it would be like a v8supercar

Fix it soon mate cause i had those symptons for about two month after giving it hard time at calder and then with no warning it smashed second gear off the cluster gear.

i like my 4th gear as it is.. pulls really strongly all the way to 190+km/h
3rd peaks out at aobut 150-155km/h (usually just touch the rev limiter as i cross the line) there is no speed limiter..
and im sitting on about 2200rpm on 110-115km/h

as is at the moment..
1st = 60km/h
2nd = 100km/h
3rd = 150km/h
4th = 190km/h
5th = pushing way over 200 clicks..

im crossing the line at 150km/h, the work from GnD will see me going (alot) faster.. and the last thing i need is to be changing to 5th before the end of the 1/4..

ok, well its not my gearbox.. YET..

how do I know this.. because the diff let go last night..
ive never heard anything like it, big smashing, crunching, grinding and banging, with some god awful shuddering.. was intense, was about 2 streets from home..
and about 15 people came running to the end of their driveways to see what was going on..

now im up for a new diff, so its getting a new centre, lsd and 3.7 diff ratios....
after the diff gets done the car will get all buffed up and a clear coat over it, get the interior all steam cleaned shampooed and what not then and after that Im fairly sure its going up for sale..
