You've got lotsa choices for a 5-speed. If you want to keep your existing gear ratios but just add an overdrive the Sierra box is your go. But if you want to get closer ratios through the intermediate gears you can go for a Celica steel case or a Supra alloy case. Conversion kits are readily available from people like Jeff Dellow Automotive in Sydney.

the sierra box will be the cheaper option but unless you change your diff ratio it will do nothing for performance as 5th is just an overdrive, the problem with the celica/supra box's is the set up cost and the power loss through its gear train.

Sierra boxes must be cheaper these days ... when I did mine the Toyota conversions were the way cheaper option. I don't know how you figure there is any more power loss through the geartrain ... they do have slightly stronger gearsets but not that you'd notice when driving I wouldn't think. And to counter that, if you used the alloy case you would save about 10kg weight over the Sierra box I think.

If you just want to drop the revs on the freeway, the sierra box is the way to go. You can pick them up from $300-$450. Anymore than that and you'd want some sort of warrantee. If you want performance stick with the 4-speed. You can get performance geИИИИts from the uk and the quicker you can get into top the better. The celica/supra conversions vary from really good to basically a truck gearbox. I've driven an early one in a 1600 Capri and it was a dog, and I recently drove a Mk 1 Escort with a 2lt and Supra 5spd and it was brilliant. I'm fitting this box to my Capri. Do some research before you spend you money.

i think that the escorts gearing is perfect as it is, they only need an overdrive, for contsant speed driving or highway driving, as they rev fairly high sitting a 60km/h
