I have a 2012 Mondeo Zetec Petrol Turbo.
A couple of weeks ago the motor died at around 110,000km. It has a hole in the back of the block, somewhere around the oil filter I think the mechanic said. Why? Anyone's guess. It was running slightly roughly at idle, cutting out at low revs occasionally. It was taken to a mechanic and he found the oil low. He serviced it and 5 days later it just unceremoniously lost power and died. Is this car likely to be worth anything to anyone of should we just send it to the crusher? That would be a pity as it is otherwise fine. No-one has suggested that it is worth repairing due to the labour cost alone. Cars seem to be so throw away these days. Body & interior is pretty good for age (Midnight Sky). We are not interested in selling parts. We have withdrawn the rego. Before anyone asks the car is located on the Northern Tablelands of NSW. |

If theres nothing else wrong with the car, you like it and want to break the throwaway mentality you could always look for a second hand engine, not to say that the replacement wouldn't have any issues either.
Scrap value would be limited I'd say, the main thing it'd be sought after for would be its engine for Escort/ Cortina Zetec conversions.

As the rego has been cancelled, it’s no longer viable for a DIY’er to repair.
Due to location it’s probably close to having to pay someone to take it away. |

You should at least contact a repair centre that specialises in fitting reconditioned engines. I know where I am in Canberra there are several that can do this, and since this is what their business are setup to do, you can assume they will do the best job and the best price and you can expect some form of a warranty period. They will have their own way to check that the engine they are installing is worth the effort, and they most likely repair your old engine to go into someone else's vehicle in the future too. Once you get a price from a specialised repairer, then that can help you to decide?

Maybe buy a used engine out of a write off,(should be pretty sure of getting a good one) and maybe get someone to backyard fit it for you.Should,t take more than a day to fit.Or do all the prep work yourself to remove. An engine isn,t very hard to changeover and it isn,t rocket science,just undo,remove and refit replacement

As Mountain Man has said in his post he's also cancelled the rego
It would not be worth the $ and risk to get another engine supplied and fitted plus then register the car with a blue slip which then involves a more expensive green slip Also how would he get it to a workshop in the first place? So imho the car is pretty much worthless |

Buy a 2012 2.0 Zetec, get engine shipped to his place, which btw is as stated Northern Tablelands of NSW, (or ship engine plus tow the car to nearest backyarder's backyard), then pay said backyarder to install engine. Properly.
$500-$600 all up?? |

It’s truly not like that in mainland NSW now.
I’ve personally seen your model demonstrated with good and bad outcomes in northern Tasmania; to some extent it depends who you know, what your expectations are and what skills you bring to the table - but here it’s almost possible to sense a level of prejudice (in many facets of the industry) against a car over seven or eight years of age. |

I'm guessing he's either set the car on fire somewhere up in the mountains of northern NSW? Or he found an engine, and someone to replace the engine for $500-$600 all up!! |
