Default Mondeo 2012 petrol start issue?

Hi,

Ran across a start issue the other week where car would start then cut out within second or two. Like not getting fuel after start up

Have to wait then it starts. Car running fine once going.

Happened again yesterday

Hi,

I would either get the battery checked or just replace the battery.

My 2007 has done that twice before, and it was a simple battery change

No luck with new battery, like no fuel getting to it

Why not use Forscan? It's free on PC and nearly free on mobile phone.
Another resource is

Look under fuel system diagnosis maybe?

so problem seem to got worse now and had to get a tow from Bunnings to home one day.

Once home, i pulled the fuel pump fuse, was fine, replaced fuse and car started.

Thinking this is either the fuel pump going bad or its not getting power to it.

Car drives fine and still doing many kms,

service guy at Ford claims the harness->pump in the boot/hatch area tends to short the circuit and hence pump doesn't work(pump may actually be okay)

must replace pump and harness if anybody does the job

Well the car worked again for a week or so, then got stranded again.

Luckily I got home after sitting at a 7-eleven for about 2hrs one morning ( got a rental car for rest of week as had some important work to finish)

Numerous times the car started after this.

Research from the net is indicating its either a failed fuel pump, the wiring harness that goes to fuel pump is faulty or there is something shorting the system.

I dont feel the pump is actually faulty

I purchased a new harness and this morning went about draining tank and then removing tank. Put on some trance and got stuck into it. Reasonably straight forward.

Tommorow will do some investigation. Have to get 2 x filler hose clamps

Cheers

look at that second pin, looks likely that's your issue. keep going well done.

okay, after seeing the condition of the pin on top of the fuel pump assembly i decided yesterday to buy a new fuel pump

will be interesting to see the life span of this fuel pump, the ebay seller has significant +ve feedback for everything they sell

so I had to drive and get it,

yesterday i was able to fit new fuel pump and harness into the tank and the got tank installed back in car loosely

the o-rings provided with the new pump were installed how they came out of my original pump, i hope this will be correct

hopefully get assembled in next few hours

PS cant seem to get any photos uploaded, over quota?

after returning hire ute and walking home i got moving to finalise the work.

buttoned everything up, charcoal canister connections, fuel lines, filler hose, all the heat shield screws, fuel pump harness, tank supports etc

used a hose and funnel to put 8-10litres of fuel in where the filler tube meets the tank inlet.

turn key and could hear the fuel pump prime which was a relief and then started car up, all good

went driving, few stops and starts, put a bit more fuel in car

as the fuel filter is contained within the pump unit and wonder if the car does run a little better (115,000kms on odometer)

best to upload them to a picture hosting site and get the Direct Links for them.

I prefer http://postimage.org/

when you go to post the links hit the 'insert image' icon in the tools above the message box and paste the link in it, or paste the links in the post. On a side note I thank you for not posting full sized pics at x MB's each.

Good work on the fix, you've earned a few drinks...

Thanks Cobrin, have a couple of stoli’s next weekend I reckon

Done a couple of hundred km’s today, definitely tell a new fuel filter has been put in car

There is a bit of speculation that the fuel pump overheats and causes the problems, i wonder if the fuel filter being clogged with more contaminants puts strain on the pump and the heat kills the connector pins?

Hey toyota lexcen I'm doing the same job on my 2010 MB. Was the pump you got a Goss? I'm looking at putting one of those in mine. Also I gather you had to get the loom off Ford?

I drained the tank today and started dropping the tank, couldn't get the heat shield completely out and then it started persisting with rain which stopped me as I'm only working in the driveway. Will probably continue on Sat and hopefully get access to the pump to see what model it is. I'm suspecting the burned connector issue as before it finally gave up the ghost my interior light was fluctuating in brightness.

Cheers

sounds just like me in my driveway

i got the pump and loom from auto wholesale Aus (they have ebay store or you can go there),

ford wanted $680 for the pump and loom (I got pump and loom from auto wholesale aus, thnk $210 all up)

its manufactured by Ultra=Tech, whether thats good I dont know. Have done around 1000kms now and going fine. Is a bit noisier.

I didnt take heat shield off, just removed all fasteners then removed tank down to the ground towards the drivers side rear wheel, and then slide out the back. Took into shed and cleaned up, removed fuel pump.

Ok, got the thing half down, tilted to the drivers side. Trying to work out how all the different fuel line connectors work now. Cursing Ford for not making an access hatch!

I think I'll get a Goss pump for around $350. They're made in Melbourne apparently and seem to have reasonable reviews.

is the GOSS the whole assembly? as the motor may not be the fault, it could be the connectors/plugs/terminals etc in the assembly

wait and inspect what the issue(s) are then buy whats needed

edit: just found the GOSS, looks good, will head down thaT path if this one fails

Yes the failure is in the connector, exactly the same as yours. Frd definitely have a design problem there! I'm going Goss, couldn't find the replacement on the Goss site but Supercheap found it the other day in their system so will get it from them I reckon. Will see if they can get me the loom too.

the loom wasn't damaged on mine just the fuel pump connectors. changed it anyway

i know when I rang ford, the service guy wouldn't itemise the pump & loom cost

good, its a lot easier reassembling everything

i made a long funnel to put fuel in at the tank inlet prior to clamping the filler tube

OK so it turns out what I thought SuperCheap were finding was Goss but it's not. The Goss one has no filter. I ended up going OEM (VDO) from Precision Engine Components on ebay: pecaustralia for $384 for the pump and got the loom from Ford for $82.

Hi,

update on the fuel pump for 2.3L petrol

got approximately 60,000kms out of it and now suffered same failure

purchased from same supplier just before xmas. Haven't changed the loom as this is in perfect condition.

Couple of signs for a fuel pump which could be on the way out:

- fluctuating idle at startup, starts then goes down to 800rpm then back up to 900rpm, bit erractic

- cannot here the pump as much in the cabin

May try the Ford OEM in 18mths to see if better if I still have the car.

cheers
