Default V6 GT Capri

Here are some progress picks of the Capri I bought for my son for his 18th, this is a project that we are rebuilding as I believe you can't just give them a car like this.

Thanks Old Baldy

We have put hundreds of hours in so far, everything back to bare metal and absolutely no rust. Being a numbers matching car we are being pretty thorough.

Hi Cosworthfreak,

It's original color is Peppermint Green Metalic but the boy doesn't like green so we went with Ford True Blue. Just waiting on the verification letter from ford, from what i can find they were released on the 25.02.1970 with the V6 and this one is a 02.70 build

The first batch of GT/V6 Capris were assembled at Homebush, NSW in January, 1970, 40 of them and all manuals. The second batch of 123 were assembled in February, 1970. The GT/V6 was released to the general public here in Australia on 25th February, 1970, correct. No automatic model GT/V6s were assembled until the first one in August, 1970 and then 4 more in September, 1970. Automatic numbers increased after this initial run. Keep up the good work, Terry.

I don't think it's a 4 cyl body. Not from what I can see in the photos.

The only "differences" in the Capri body(what i am aware of.)was the "Bonnet Bulge" other than that it was pretty much the same.(except for decals etc.....)

This is definitely a V6 verified by Ford, the V6 also has 3 bolts for the front cross member and extra supports under the strut tower. We also have the matching v6 for this car.

I have pretty fair knowledge of this car. It belonged to a very good friend of mine for the past 30+ years I actually raced it at Benaraby Raceway in the mid 80's and ran 15.1 on it's 13x5 super grip tyres. The car was pulled apart for a rebuild in the very early 90's put into the panel beaters where it stayed for 8 years until it was picked up and taken home and put in the shed until I bought it 3 years ago. We then striped it back to bare metal to see what was underneath and was happy to find no rust, the color that is on the outside of the car was sprayed straight over the primer from bare metal (gives you an idea how good this body is) Once we get the motor in it will g back for final panel be rubbed back and painted for us to finish it out. Every nut and bolt has been taken out and cleaned or replaced so far and the dash pads are to the dash doctor next week.

What about the 4cylinder front left inner guard? - just letting you know as there isn't many people who can pic these cars and half of the so called "genuine v6 GT's" getting around are re bodied 4cylinders with triangle brackets welded in and a 3 bolt cross member (all very easy to do).

Regardless, will be a nice car.

You have me curious, the car has had a smack in the front left when it ran into a mates GTR Torana and the left front guard was replaced.
Nice pick up. I don't know the difference can you tell me what you spotted.

What makes you think it's a 4 cylinder inner guard?

I can't see enough of the passenger inner guard to say it's a 4 cyl one. There are other differences for a genuine V6, and I can see most of them in the photos.

Kev, the V6 passenger inner guard had an indent to fit the battery. I'll see if I can find a photo.

Cheers
Jamie

I know what your looking for, I thought it was part of the damage and knocked it back out with a hammer and dolly. If it was meant to be there that would be the reason it hours to get it flat.

Yep. I knocked that out flat. My first mistake. I thought the panel beaters were just lazy.

This is what it looks like now, when it was "fixed" by the original panel beaters they just bogged over everything including body lines, I had that all taken out and hammered back into place. not perfect but better.

Since you've already had it painted I wouldn't worry. If you ever had to re-do something in the engine bay, then look at it again.

Even without the battery tray recess, the inner guard is still a 4cylinder one and not a banged up v6 one (it has 4cyl pressings, which will always raise suspicions to it's authenticity). I reckon leave it as is and just enjoy it.
