Hi All, My AU series 2 Auto Ghia sedan is making a whinning noise which seems to be coming from under (or just behind) the centre console. Cant hear anything until 40KPH and them the noise starts and increases as speed increases. Auto issue perhaps? Ant ideas? Anyone had this sound in there AU. THX.

Id say one of 2 things; the diff or a wheel bearing.
Wheel bearing whine is very distinct, sounding like an old prop driven aircraft. And its loud as hell at highway speeds. |

Been there and done that. In my case, a trans service and flush, solved the problem. (clearly hadn't been serviced in a very long time!)

Thx, SPArKy Dave, I was quoted $1800+, due to the type of diff in the AU. Would this be right? Will ring Agmech tommorow.

Still, being an IRS rear end it isn't that hard to drop the center, once the axles, 4 or 5 bolts, and driveshaft is all out/disconnected, it should drop straight down.

I doubt it, even with removing the entire cradle, removal shouldn't take more then an hour, unless your mechanic doesn't know what he's doing.

5 hours to get it out ??? Wow , maybe 1.5 tops . It's a simple IRS rear end .
I would get a 2nd opinion mate .

Go with the cheapest option first.
In saying that, the AU wheels bearings are a sealed, all in one unit. Fairly rare to see them pack up, but if it is a bearing, it is and will be a complete bearing assembly. Not cheap, but still cheaper than the option of the diff. That time frame is stupid. Its clear the guy has no idea. If it were me, I'd get the trans serviced first. Full flush and service. If it turns out not to be that, so be it, its cost you what? $120? and you know the trans is serviced for another 20,000km. Then move onto the wheel bearing suggestion, and so on. Like others have said, too hard to know over the net, and it's basically speculating.

Thx Blueoval, I have had the same idea, have had the transmission done full flush and service, all ok, tommorow will get the bearing done.
When I swerve hard to the left the noise momentarily stops, when I swerve to the right the noise is constant. Think it is a bearing...I hope lol. |

Sounds plausible that its a wheel bearing then mate. Let us know the outcome.

Yep sounds like a bearing. Have had both ones at the front replaced in the last few years, sounded exactly as you've described.

Update, its was the front left wheel bearing. All is now nice and quite. I hope this thread helps others who start to hear this difficult to identify noise/issue. The whining noise actually sounded as if it was beneath the centre consol and sounded (as someone earlier stated) like a droning propeller. The noise obviously travelled through the chassis. Hopefully this will help others who (as I did) do a search for "whining noise AU".

Can confirm this same issue, sounds like a diff is gone, but I consider my AU3 ghia at only 140000 genuine kms it hasn't done enough to be diff yet. I thought something wasn't right when the other night I rode in the passenger seat, and just sitting on the other side of the car the noise sounded to be coming from a different place in the car. Left front was the issue.
Thanks ron, your pictures and story make it look easy.
