Default Mk2 Fuel tank in Mk1 escort

Anyone put a Mk2 fuel tank in a mark 1. Got a problem being that I way 105kg and with the fuel tank on the same side that in excess of 150kg. Makes the car lean to one side. Anyone got any ideas on how to solve

Whats a easy and cheap way to stiffen the **** end. I have a rear sway bar to mount but what can be done with the leafs?

a simple upgrade for the leafs is to get a set of springs from a panel van, they have an extra leaf ..

I have seen Mk 1's with a Mk'2 drop tank, the late model mk1's had the same floor pan so all the brackets can be used from the mk2 or
the other option is to install a tank on the left hand side as well

Agreeing with puzzle, if you can get your hands on a mk2 pv grab the whole diff assembly.
You'll get 3.54 :1 ratio, the axles are heaps thicker and they have a six, yep count em SIX! spring pack
as opposed to the saggy and rolly polly 3 pack they gave the mk1's. I have just done this to my mk1
2 door and the difference is Phenominal, she tail whips hard now without the roll and preload the old springs gave.
No more tyre chaffing as the end sags onto the fatties either


A few of things to consider/do when converting.

1.The hangers at the rear... You keep the top ones on your car that have the bolt
going thru the boot and drill the bottom (the one for the spring) hole bigger.This will allow
room for the bottom hanger from the pv which has a larger bolt size.
You will need to keep the bottom hanger from the pv as the spring hole is larger and so
is the matching hanger bolt.

2. The front leaf mount on your mk1 body. This is narrower, You will need to open them
out further and drill the bolt hole bigger,you will need to use the mounting bolt off the pv,
I mounted the leafs and complete diff assembly in its hangers, lined up the leafs to the front mounts,
gently jacked it up ensuring the tailshaft yolk was lined up and going into the gearbox nicely,
and using a cold chisel as a wedge bashed it between the spring trying to go in
and the mount to widen it. This got me in so far,then I slid to the rear, sat on my bum
and drop kicked the diff to force the spring in further
till the bolts lined up Presto.

3. If you do decide to use a mk1 diff and just swap springs for mk2 mind that the
shocky hanger plate u bolts are the same. (mk1 diffs tend to have narrower axle housings). You may
have to keep the plate and u bolts off the mk1. Hence its easier and less bolts to use the whole diff.
You wont even have to unbolt the tail shaft, it will just slide out of the box as you drag the diff assembly
out on your trolley jack.

4. Using a mk2 diff will leave you with a difference in brake hose thread. Imperial vs metric.
It will leak a little under full pressure. If this bothers you you could re-flare the mk2 nut on the
metal pipe end attached to your body and use the flexible hose of the mk2 instead.

Obviously fatxagt you are compensating for your manhood with a under powered V8 and 4.5 ton piece of crap they used to call a race car. I see by your pic that you like going in a straight line. Is that hard! Did you do one of those defensive driving courses to learn that or did your grandmother teach you.
