Escort steering rackend removal

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knows how to remove a steering rackend from a mk2 escort? I have the tie rod end and boot off but removing the rackend from the rack has me stumped. Its obviosly threaded on but the rackend is round so you cant take a spanner to it. It has got a hole drilled in it so i am wondering if there is a special tool for it? I have tried large multi grips but its to tight. I really want to do it without removing the entire rack.

Can't remember Escorts specifically but yes it is screwed on. Make sure the drilled hole hasn't got a lock pin in it. If it has, you will have to drill it out first, then unscrew the rack end. They are very tight. I've got a special tool that clamps around the ball end for undoing them but I've also used a good set of pipe wrenches (Snap-on) to do the job. Once those suckers grab, they will never slip. You can hang your full body weight off them!

A pipe wrench is what you'll need to unthread it, as they are as tight as. When putting a new one back in, make sure you use some loctite just as insurance it doesn't come undone again.
