in what way is your diff "on its way out"
if its whining .. then its bearings.. bearings die in any diff if its LSD and its single spinning when it isnt supposed to.. decide how you drive..and buy a diff thats built to suit you can use a Lokka diff center that becomes an open center when you back off or hold steady rate of speed around a corner but locks the axles when you stand on the accelerator or a KAAZ diff center that is a good quality item but ALOT more expensive then there is just getting the stock item reshimmed and rebuilt nice and tight the 4.11 diff gears from a pintara fit.. but i beleive they are weaker due to being japanese and in a cheap car

I wouldn't say AU's have weak diffs, my AU puts out a decent amount of power and it has held up fine apart from the normal wear and tear that blackers has mentioned above.
What are the symptoms of your diff thats "on the way out"?

its really clunky. this happened to my old au and then the diff died. i have blown 2 au diffs. now i drive more sensible with my xr8. dont do burnout or anything and its just getting more clunky. my r33 skyline is has got 250rwkw and that has standard diff and that handles drag meetings and alot of sideways action and isnt even one bit noisey. im sorry to say but every au diff i have had has broken. maybe im just unlucky but i did flog my old car a bit. but the xr8 is the car i drive to work and occasionally have a little drag in. was going to shift kit it and hi stall it but the diff is to noisey :(

yes i have and it has been changed. new diff oil doesnt fix a clunky diff. its just worn out. just trying to find a stronger alternitive thats reasonably cheap

First Ive heard they have weak diffs. Its the centres that fit, not the whole diff. Early skyline and pintara centres. Or maybe thats just the diff gears. I sure would consider something different to replacing a "weak" diff with something 20 years old, from a car with half the power.

the diffs don't fail its just the clutches/cones or whatever thats in them ,they chatter when turning at slow speed .ford recomended that additive to put in them which pretty much turned them into a single spinner ,but kept them quite around tight corners .
josh hartman, how exactly do you mean you blew two diffs? did they just get noisy and chatter ?

the Diff in My AU1 XR8 was rebuilt by Ford in '05 (previous owner, have receipts) and has cause me no Drama's in the 18 months i have owned the car, I'm changing to a Lokka for the benefit of guaranteed two wheel launches whenever i can get it out to the track and also so i h=dont have to worry about it dropping one wheel around a corner instead of just driving through

Don't buy a BA/BF then
I'll take an AU diff any day But if you want to be a race car driver then they wont cop it for too long. Driven normally an AU should give you 250000kms or so easy. |

GK .. either way its to do with gears wearing which needs new shims and tolerances changed to compensate(unless shims wear?)
FC:LTD the kaaz and lokka centers go inside the diff gears.. you can choose any gear ratio for them to fit inside.. 2.02 to 4.11 doesnt matter

Or it could have to do with bearings dying.... and the Lokka fits intoan open centre hemisphere and bolts into any centre, KAAZ is its own hemisphere and bolts into any gear ratio
