Default Best Boss Driveline Combo for Drags??

Hi Guys,
After all the reading of the good work from bluepower, think I will leave the xr8 alone and get a pursuit ute to play with.

My question is what is the best driveline combo for drags in terms of times and reliability??? Want to make sure i get the right one upfront.......

1.Is a 4 speed auto with 4.11s best?
2. 6 Speed manual with 4.11's??
3. 6 Speed Auto with 3:7's or 4.11s?

Any facts would be appreciated!!!!

Not sure how the blown boss's go, but I know of a 550rwkw F6 with the ZF 6 speed auto that broke an input shaft at the strip with a pretty docile launch.

If you want a manual, The TR6060 is apparently pretty strong, but you will always run quicker with a stalled auto.

That leaves you with the 4 speed auto, as the ZF cannnot have any more than a couple of hundred rpm increase on the stall setting (you might find the extra grunt will increase the stock stall speed anyway) I believe any more rpm sends the transmission ECM into limp mode.

I didnt really help you did I....... :

Good post CAT600.

I would prefer the 4spd auto, as you can build some "give" into a converter that will save the car.......

My low 10 sec ute is a testament to this.

With the 6spd Auto, as well as software issues, they also have reduction sprag type gears in the higher ratios, meaning WEAKER. so a ZF with gears for drags, not my cup of tea.

Manual? See Craig lunch the diff in his GT? Wade and Glenn both breaking lock pins in leaf springs?? too hard on the car.

A well built 4spd auto will be comfy with big power and repeated runs, and also give rewarding bang for buck in the wallet department.

Chris

Lets not forget me also lunching a diff!! : Although I love manuals cause I think it takes a little more skill + I like to actually drive the car, longevity wise auto is the GO down the strip. Easier on everything all round, driving and drive line wise. As far as which box??? If Chris says 4spd then take it as gospel and do it.

Cheers
Glenn

Yeh manuals are definately hard on the car Chris and a much bigger challenge to get down the strip, breakages is something you must prepare for if driving a manual.

Not achievable with a 260 with boltons but add a blower, some slicks, bit of suspension setup and a good driver its definately achievable but it wont happen overnight.

thanks for the offers of help...... and sales. HOT460 looks like a good deal.....

I did get a BF xr8 ute 6 speed manual for just under 20 with 60kms which i thought was a great offer.

I know its not a pursuit but sometimes things fall into your lap that just seem meant to be....

I've been told to bin my capa vortech blower kit and get a KB. But i think i will put it on and run it with the usual mods as surely it should at least put me into the 11's.. Also need something to teach my self the sct adv 3 software so it will be some fun times ahead. Once i get my together will look at the KB option.....

Any tips for what/how people have set these babies up??

3 Boss's and 470,000klm's later. Still love the V8 Boss!

Picked up the turbo today. Its got some nice low down grunt. It suprised me a little. Just doesn't have that V8 feel or sound. And that bonnet bulge. Give me a Boss motor any day!
Hopefully my boss will buy my old ute and put a kb on it and use it as a dedicated drag car!

For the 6spd auto. I recommend 3.45:1

Anything lower would be silly (for 1st gear).

Ok I got a hold of a complete difillipo big boy system and 4.10 gears. Just want to confirm that 4.10s are ok for a blown application (vortech) to begin with?

4.1's will give the correct "over the line" rpm's for a stout NA application - depends on exactly how much power you make with the vortech.

Well I've had the vortech in a box for 12months I bought just before I discovered what bpr were capable of. I'd say 350kw at wheels would be about max I would expect from the vortech. I still plan to source a second boss motor and get it rebuilt with a kb 2.8, but given that is about a 30k exercise it may take some months to afford it.

Im looking at this, and changing the 5 speed to 6 speed. Anyone know how many kph per 1000rpm the T56 runs in 5th?

Have also heard a slightly higher 1st ratio is the go, as otherwise 1st is too low.

Am i on the right track Chris?

Depends on setup, and how hard you wish to RPM the car. If we are talking about setup alone, a taller first gear will " load" up the car more and will highlight potential setup issues. A short first gear driven correctly will accelerate hard, but may hurt the tyres.
