Mixture too lean? Blocked Cat? Collapsed muffler? Converter tarred up? There's 4 ideas, no way I could know which one is right, but perhaps the mixture and converter issues can be sorted out/diagnosed (by a mechanic) more quickly then the exhaust ones.

The stepper motor which controls how much gas entering the mixer ring is possibly seized in an almost closed position. Remove it, force it open then refit but don't plug it in, then take it for a run.

have you found out yet what caused this?
I notice you said "sometimes" which is exactly what mine does. I've got a lpg vapour injection setup rather than mixer ring though so its not exactly the same setup... Its done it maybe five or six times in the few months - always began within a few minutes of first startup in the morning and usually goes away after a couple of minutes or after slowing down or stopping and starting up again. once it did it for about 50km of highway driving until i went through a town and then was fine. just have to keep very gently on the throttle and keep it below 2000rpm. too much throttle and it would just choke and nearly stall.
I suspect the converter getting gummy (although its only a few months old) but if you find a proper diagnosis i'd be interested to hear it.

Sounds like it may be stuck in limp home mode everytime it gets switched on gas...

It only started doing it after it had a hard time starting on gas.

It has not been driven for a while, taking it to a specialist soon...
