Default Another Gearbox Question.

Hey all..

Driving around in my car, sorta noticed when its in gear, all gears (manual) that the gearstick moves backwards and forwards about 2inches, but no movement at all side to side..
I dont know if its always been like this and just noticed it recently, or not, I have a feeling it wasnt like this when I got it though lol.. :

Anyone have an idea of what it could be?
it feels kinda sloppy.. (i keep telling myself a short shift kit will solve it) but i want to make sure its not a serious problem.. and that I can fix it in the mean time.

thanks in advance..

Matt

2 inches is a fair bit of movement...

i am thinking either the rear gearbox mount, or maybe the gearstick is loose...

my gearstick was loose once and it had a fair bit of movement...

it has done it a few times, but thats because me being lazy and not putting it all the way into gear and letting the clutch out too early.. its never just poped out of gear when driving along.

Im hoping its the selector bushes, but im not sure, there is no movement at all side to side. just forward to back.
Ive got a feeling the gearbox is on its way out, its copped a fair bit of abuse over the last year.

Stidds hows the diff going i was talking to my mate the other day trying to work out which ratio im going proberlly 3.9.

With the sloppyness of youre shifter it could be a couple of things like already mentioned bushes or just another typical T5 on its way out my last Au was a manual and went big time.

Go for 3.9's.. diff is good though(just got an annoying handbrake squeal that surfaced after the diff was done), I want 3.9's lol, annoyed at myself that I didnt get 3.9's to be honest. I'll be going back soon to get 3.9's fitted. Already spoken to them about it.

Another thing I noticed today is that I can feel vibrations, well really, the car through the gearstick.. I dont know, its not low on oil or anything like that its just been replaced and all is good so im not sure.
and If I draw the gear out, but not change and then compression in that gear, ie.. accelerate to 4000rpm in 2nd and back off and compression.. the gearstick goes all stiff and I have to rock it from side to side in nutral so it loosens up and lets me use it like normal again.
its weird, and its $2200 exchange for a new T5 Z-spec, dont want to spend the extra cash just yet if I dont need to.

based on that information, it shouldnt be selector bushes then. gear shoft would be able to move side to side when gear is selected

But will it bolt up to an AU i6??

I dont know, I'll just be nice to it for now and see what happens.. if it breaks it breaks.
I'll take it to a few gearbox places and see what they say.

thanks for the help,
Matt

That's cheap, is it because it's manual? Or have you got a good contact?

I herd a while ago some one had A LOT of them for some reason.
So when mine started playing up the other week i decided to look into it.
I heard $895 plus gst.
The Box guy wanted $700 to open mine put new syncro's in and look at it.
He said if you can get one that cheep do it.
So i tracked down the name and it turned out to be the Geelong Ford Dealer.
He goes yep got 1 left $900 + 30 delivery to Cranny....
Thank you very much. Had it next moring.....
If only I could get the clutch back that quick.....
