"validated members" area

I have noticed over the last 12 months that the forum has become more restrictive in terms of content, language and general "feel".

I can understand this as it is a public forum and we are judged by what the world can see.

There are times however where a more "positive discussion" could take place if it were away from prying eyes.

Our buddies at ls1.com.au have what they call Area 51 which is restricted to validated members only. This is not an elite club rather the member has fronted up to the appropriate admins/mods/whatever and proved that they exist and are not a banned member under another name or a anti car nutter or even a pro car nutter or a "12 year old 11 second GT owner".

The restrictions on language can at times be quite annoying as it precludes denoting a point as it would be in the real world. This is Australia and we all speak "stroin", well most of us anyway.

If someone has a problem there can be an amount of fear of litigation etc if they make public statements which would be reduced in a restricted area.

Any thoughts on this?

One of the reasons we created the DM area was to allow for a less restrictive environment away from public view - the fact that it is restricted to DM's allows a certain committment from those who wish to be involved in the discussions there.

You make some interesting points, but I note they are made on a trail of one of our moderators recently asking that that genre of discussions be held within the TOC of the site.

I agree with Russell with regards to the DM area, of which has already been of great success based on 2 days of opening and illustrated by the user names being of a different color in the member lists.

We will always continue to censor words, and in fact add alternatives as they are adapted, not only for the foremost reason that this site is intended to be family friendly but more so I find it pathetic that one must swear to communicate graphically

But as always, the time taken to post as you have is refreshing to know that the passion about the site is alive, and respect your right to do so.

Obviously you were not listening when your "Nanna" was speaking about grammar.

"Flappist, my Nanna always said that cuss words only came out when you didn't have a gist of the King's English." is slightly closer to English language although the contractions are more colloquial vernacular rather than formal.

The language I use in everyday situations is a vernacular indigenous to south eastern Queensland where I reside. This vernacular includes several words that have been determined as unsuitable for use on this and other fora. I raised this point and have been answered appropriately.

Yes it currently is but only since 2/6/1953.

In that I have no idea of the age of the abovemention person is it is quite possible that at the time of the statement it was correct.
