Default AU V8 into AU I6 Fairlane whats different

hey guys
wondering what is different between the AU 8 and AU 6 fitment(whats different ie g/boxes, computer, tail shafts..etc
and is much involved to do a swap between the 2?

how much do you guys think this would cost??

The S/H market for V8 fairlanes is so bad that you would be better to buy one and sell yours than do all the work for a swap.

Probably not what you want to hear but its true.

wouldnt the XR8 engines bolt in tho??

you'd need to change:
loom
ECU
transmission
engine
likely other small things aswell, not to mention AU V8's and tranmissions arnt cheap, and i don't think you'd get *that* much selling your current driveline.

i'd agree with jonbays and say selling and buying a V8 one would be a lot better.

I used to do red motors into toyota crowns then rotary's into piston mazdas and a capri or two, P76 V8's into Triumph stags and falcon alloy head 4.1 into W123 mercs and I am totally over it. Lots of work getting the fiddly bits right and time and money etc.

If you want the V8 just buy one. In sydney there are heaps of them being given away unless they are on LPG and even then they are cheap as the depreciation on these cars is horrific.

Don't expect the V8 to be much quicker than the VCT.

Yeh the VCT is a great little motor.

I have priced up a few from the wreckers to put into the wagon believe it or not $1200-$1500 only a bargain really but all i wanted the engine for was to do the head swap with all the ancillary items.

The base power numbers are very similar between the V8 and the VCT six but the real world torque and lovely exhaust note of the windsor are very nice to have.

Also there is a big difference between having 135rwkw at 5000rpm and having 135rwkw at 4500rpm. The V8 has a much higher average power over the rev range you mostly use on the street.

no big diff, subframe is identical and V8 engine mounts bolt, using the V8 transmission mount it bolts up too ...

I am in the process of a similar conversion with an Au Forte

does the V8 give better gains for money spent than the VCT 6??

i think ill do some light mods (exhaust..chip..intake piping) and see how i feel about the I6.. im sure it will serve me well enuff with that..

its just a shame when a 1.8 DOHC ford laser NON TURBO can keep level with you from any speed (from 0 or from 100)

Back in 2000 when I brought my VCT pwrd Ghia. I had taken a VT S2 which was just released with the GEN111 mtr & found it quick once it got going.


Few days later I tested a S1 XR8 and a VCT XR6 & found the V8 not that great in noticable performance over the 6. I settled on a demo VCT Ghia as it would be more suited to daily running costs & insurance plus no real lose of pwr for city & H/way driving.

If you want outright performance the V8 probely has more aftermart parts from the U.S & the top exhuast sound to go with it
