I'd be going the reco rack. Much cheaper and they're usually just as good. It is a fiddly job to do yourself, but not impossible.

I'm with JC here. With a reco all the worn bits are replaced so it's just about as good as a new one.
Can the people who quoted you on the new one quote on a reco one?

Those prices are for reco racks. The first one is through my service guy in Toowoomba. The second one is a exchange reco rack from a reputable (i hop) ebay seller. You have to pay a deposit for the exchange of your old one. I wouldnt attempt to do it myself as its my driver.

The ones that Ford sell for AUs are Reconditioned by a crowd in Melbourne, they are FULLY recoed. Part number RMER 3504 A $424.00, they are covered by Ford's 12 month/ 20,000 klm warranty and if they fail can be repaired at ANY ford dealer anywhere in Australia.

Does that include rack ends in those prices? I had mine replaced with a reco unit including rack ends for about $600-700 fitted, new fluid etc

Pedders Suspension do make a new rack for AUs... i think it was going to be about $700 fitted, but that was 6 months ago and i really cant remember...

Done the T through Pedders no dramas. XR8 now due and will be done same way. Cheaper to exchange your old one too which is what most of them want.

Just a quick update. Reconditioned rack fitted and new power steering switch. $540 all up in Toowoomba. Wow what a difference that has made, car is much nicer to drive and has more power WTF!!!!! Seems to me the ailing rack was robbing more ponies than i thought possible.

Mega old thread I know but how many km had your car done when your rack started leaking? Mines clicked over 180,000 and it's creaking and there is a fair bit of oil on the LHS of the rack if your looking from the front

180k and 10 years on the original rack is fairly good imo
i've seen racks last ~230k but they've only been 6 or 7 years old

Make sure the creaking noise is definitely from the rack itself. It could also be ball joints making that sound.
