Unhappy can anyone help this idiot(me)?

I've done something to my computer that has stopped me from hearing sounds that i receive with emails or download from the net. My wife has her own user account on the same computer and the problem does not effect her. I use windows xp home and oe6. Obviously i know 3/8 of stuff all about computers so give me the basic brain dead version of any answers that anyone has please

double click the little speaker in the toolbar (bottom left) make sure nothing is set really low on volume or muted.
