Default 1600 ford formula engine

i was on ebay recently and seen a 1600 ford formula block, when i was mucking around with my engine i realised i have the exact engine, numbers and all they both had for XXXX with a 47 in the middle, and another number down the right side which matched mine the guy on ebay said they were for racing and theyre a much stronger block but the numbers match my engine and its a BC escort is there something im missing or.. any info helpful

Formula Ford 1600 blocks were marked 711M ...
These blocks were used in many 1600cc Fords including Fiesta, Escort, Capri, Cortina and also some comercial vehicles.

There's nothing special about 711M blocks with regard to being a 'Racing Edition' except that there were a few very rare 711M blocks that were Cast Aluminum with wet liners - and these weren't used in Formula Ford 1600.

If you have a 711M block, and it's in good condition then it 'could' be used in Formula Ford 1600.

i think these blocks can be bored out/ stroked to a 1700?

The 711M replaced the earlier 681F block.
The 711M will be the block used in any 1600 equipped Ford from about 1972 onwards.
The differences are:-
Flat head (681F are "open chamber").
Better port design (but valves are same as 681F).
Thicker block walls.
Stronger crank and mains caps.

Because they are a thicker walled block they can be readily drilled out to a capacity of 1700cc. Could go bigger (1760) but becomes risky on some blocks due to variable wall thickness.

Because these engines were as common as muck they were specified for Formula Ford (being a low cost entry level formula).

In real terms, for a road engine, the only advantage is being able to safely get the 1700cc capacity.... the rest is only in the "nice" category.
For competition and high reving applications, the stronger block/crank combination would be advantageous.

Do you have any information on the inlet and exhaust valve clearance settings and cylinder head bolt torque settings for the MK2 1600 cross flow engine

No, I don't. I only have a manual covering the 681F.
Someone here may have a Mk2 Escort manual.
