My au2 i6 Fairmont Ghia seams to be using more oil than usual.
It did about 6000km and it used about 2.5 litres of oil. There are no oil leaks in the driveway or around the engine area. It is not blowing smoke. There is no oil mixed in the coolant in the reservoir. I don`t know where the oil is going but it must be going somewhere else any help where else I can check will be much appreciated. I toped it up again and it seems to be still using more than usual. Regards Fernando |

Manufacturer specifies 5w30 for AU I6's..... so running 10w40 wouldnt be an issue, I run that in my car and the wifes and uses sweet FA oil....
its got to be going somewhere.... give her a good steam clean in the engine bay/ underneath and have a look in a couple days after you have done this... Also get a mate to drive behind you while you give it a good flogging to check exhaust for smoke.

That is quite a lot.
My two AUs which are both on gas use about 1 litre per 5000 kays, as does my mate's (also on gas). As a result, I have now started adding 200mls every 1000 kays, and now have made oil change intervals 5000 kays. I know you don't think it's making smoke, but have you driven behind your car whilst someone else is doing the driving? Perhaps it's time for a compression test. All the best with it and keep us posted with how you go. GK

With a catalatic converter car they don't smoke as easily as a older pre cat cat, so often they can be burning oil with no visable exhaust smoke.
Changing to a thicker oil will help reduce oil burning, as may changing to a different brand, i personally found shell oil to be preticularily bad. Try penrite HPR15.

Having the car on gas may use a little more, but not as much as you seem to be using. Where are you located mate? If you're in a hot climate and using a low weight oil, the consumption may be higher..

Might be worth checking the crackcase ventilation system on it being that it got worse after converting to gas, and that normally one would have moved it to an unstream position of the gas mixer, idea being that it's not sucking lpg into crankcase, also check the pcv is functioning, if not working correctly either of these could cause an increased crankcase pressure which would cause it to burn more oil.
Thought i'd note that in a spec book we had for an old mercedes benz we used to own, it was in the spec's to burn 1/2 litre per 1000km's.

have a real good look around the engine bay, the mrs' suzuki swift was doing similar, losing about a litre per 4-5 thousand. turns out it was the rocker cover gasket was all hard and letting oil seep out but was being burnt by the heat of the motor before it could drip off.
anyway, your motor shouldn't be burning anywhere near that amount of oil, my poor old AUII turned 650k old two days ago and it uses about a quarter of a litre per ten thousand kays. yes, you read right.

yeah that sound about right Mr Hardware. My AU v8 has done 310,000km's started burning oil after i cooked it good and proper, blows slight smoke and yet still only uses 1 litre per 10,000kms.

Try later level pcv valve Ford P/N AUC-6A666A & Elbow P/N D9AE-6B892AA, worked on a couple of series 1 AU, with a oil consumption problem. should cost less than $15.00 for the parts
