Power to weight would be one thing.

They only need to put out ~150-200HP and some decent gearing and they fly. Great to watch aswell as they can handle very nicely.

Same way they always did ... take a 1000kg car and stick 120 to 150 horses in it and WATCH IT GO!

yep 180 horses with webers is probably possible with a 2 litre. Maybe 200 with a good throttle body setup but not without a lot of head work etc.Thats were the zetec and duratec come in!
Oh and we cant forget the cosworth motor but they can be expensive!

They run BDA engines 1600s that can rev to 9000 rpm around 220hp and $20000 + for the motor. I think running the pinto in Targa is not very common

Click HERE for a video of a MK2 Escort being chased down by a fully worked VL Turbo at Barbagallo Raceway. As they say... catching is one thing, passing is another. :

Welcome to what Escort drivers have known for a looooong time. Hugely underrated car and a lot quicker than most people give it credit for. The power numbers arent always that impressive, but power to weight and gearing and the cars phenonemal balance mean it is a very quick car on the open road / racetrack. The car in 012's video was lapping approximately low 70's, so not the fastest Escort at Wanneroo.

Not common!!!! An Escort with a pinto WON the Targa Tassie classic section a few years ago. Yes, a 180bhp pinto beat a 220+ BDA driven by V8 Supercar driver Steven Richards.

Pinto driven Escorts are the rally weapon of choice worldwide, still after 30+ years.

Well thats put me in my place. I still have my 2lt Pinto from the 1980s that is turbo charged with the Garret kit that uses the 4 runner inlet manifold its not fitted to a car but when it was it was a beast especially around the 80s, having said that I think it would perform very well today. I new Pinto's where still used today but not to the extent you mentioned I thought twin cam engines where the choice these days judging by a few English mags that seem to show Cosworth engines in just about everything. Anyway I'll go and admire my Pinto in the garage.

WHAT!!!???

I was told targa was a no no because i had a toyota engine in my car. Im led to believe that the engine needs to be from the same manufacturer as the vehicle?

Imagine what 500+ hp in a 900kg car could do !!!

Perhaps it was Targa NZ - they are a lot more liberal over there.

The only targa that could happen in would be Targa NZ.

Targa west and Targa Tas wouldn't allow that car involved same as Classic adelaide. Maybe in Rally Tas but i'm doubting that as it runs under cams as well.

.
I have two MKII 2DR Escorts one a RS2000, the same era Jap cars
are better out of the box. The Escort, Pinto and gearbox (for us
without really mega big money) have plenty of goodies available on
the market that people can buy to make them go, these fast cars
are really pretty big dollar cars.
