I was wondering if anybody recommends/swears by a particular brand of oil?
I own a 6-cylinder Fairmont and I'm interested in hearing what you all think is the best "performing" oil for the AU based on your own observations and experiences. Excluding the cheap s***, would you NOT recommend a particular type of oil because of bad experiences and problems? I'll be topping up my supply within the next few days so obviously I want to get the best stuff without just going by price. Cheers. |

I've basically tried most stuff on the market in mine and have my own personal opinions on what works best in mine.
In order of preference: Mobil 1 - The best and most expensive.. if its on sale (under $60) grab it. Shell Helix Ultra - If Mobil 1 isnt on sale this is my other choice and probably the best value for money oil I have had. Shell Helix Plus - 1 step down but a quality oil for those times when budget is very important. In all cases though I only ever use PureONE Purolator filters on my car and change the filter every oil change. These are just my preferences.. oils are like tyres... so many opinions and so many conditions of use.

Shell oils ;) , . If your really picky about your oil quality, Shell also offer a service ( not free ! ) where you can get small empty sample containers from them / fill them with your old oil / and have your oil analysed , they can give you info on the mineral content left in the oil / how burt it is / check for metal fragments ( signs of engine wear ) and a tonne of other analysis.
hehehe , when i used to do hydraulics years ago i used to send samples off from my XE and have it charged to the company ..lol

I use Penrite as well (cause they are Australian), and sometimes I use Shell Helix Ultra (cause I was a big DJR fan).
The trick with oils is to change them regularly. Better quality oils last longer before they break down...but they still break down. Good quality filters do help. I have heard nothing but good about the Purolator PureONE oil filters.

Fuchs 10W-30 (Mineral).
Been using this the last 60,000. Change it every 5,000. Although next change I will move to the Purolater filter. I never heard of 'em before and thought the old trusty Ryco Z9 was the one's to go for. Geez you can learn a lot out of this forum... :hihi:

I have posted this before but I swear by it.....
Hi mate...a have a stroked EFI 302 windsor....I run BP CORSA in mine with a MOREY's heavy duty oil stabilizer....it works a treat.....main reason are one I have an oil temp gauge....and a aftermarket oil pressure gauge....with standard oils eg Magnetec, Mobil Syn etc I noticed it ran hotter....but most obvious was oil pressure.....normal oil with out MOREY's oil pressure would drop to 15 psi at idle and peak around 75 psi.....but after adding MOREY's it only dropped to 40 psi.......and only peaked at around 60 psi.....I would recommend this to anyone.....one last thing my engine was pulled out with 65000k's on it so I could put the stroker in....and I have run BP & MOREY's from new....and once pulled apart the engine was in awesome condition basically still brand new.....could still see faint lines on the bores from the honer...A must for anyone who cares about there WINSDOR or I6 for that matter!!! I also run MOREYS in my 5 speed, Diff, Gearbox and Power steering...and never any dramas what so ever no diff wine, always spins both wheels, gearbox is smooth as....this product is a must...just try it once to see....it mixes with any oil syn or mineral....I is extremely thick when it comes out of the bottle....but don't stress it doesnt stay like that!!!!

I have a 1999 AU Fairmont and I do use it regularly to tow a boat. I was advised and am currently using Penrite 20w/60, the guy said it is good for older motors under load. Is this correct and if not what should I be usin? The car has done 145,000 kms and I usually tow about 1200 kgs.

I have been putting Shell LPG 15/40 in the ute ever since I got it .. although there is a Penrite GAS 10/40 (I think it is) .... will be trying it next ... and pretty well priced.
I change oil once a month ... so I don't see the point of putting expensive oil in the ute ... it gets changed regularly enough as it is anyway ... and I used the normal old Ryco Z9 oil filter as well. Does the job ... the ute does the job perfectly ... oil is always clean (well LPG engines do run cleaner) ... I just make sure I ahve do it regularly so the engine lasts me as long as possible.
