Hi all,
Just wondering how often you change your brake rotors assuming just normal street driving. On our AU Fairmont the front rotors were first changed at around 55Kms. Just got a service done and now we are told that the front disks are under spec and need to be changed (car now has 77Kms)!?!?! |

Front rotors stuffed in 22,000 kays. Man you must have full metal king brake pads or something, or you are getting ripped!
If you need to change them, get a set of DBA slotted rotors and Bendix Advance Pads and you won't look back. Will most likely be cheaper than Ford parts also. Give the guys at Hightek Brakes a call. I had front rotors, Bendix Advance pads (front and rear) delivered to my door for about $330. All the best with it. GK

waaay too early. i git 90thou out of my stock set
and now i am about 20thou into my dba 4400 set with kingmetals and not even a scratch on them

The quality of todays parts really makes me wonder ! , i had the original discs on my 83 XE until the day i sold it ! , they only needed machineing a few times , but were still over the minimum when it was sold in mid 95 ! . They were 12 year old discs , and nevert had a problem stoping the car . Same with diffs , whats the go with xr8's ? - do they have anything close to the strength of the good old 9" diff years ago that came out with most 8's ?

Id love to help on this topic, but IM pretty harsh on my brakes, as I drive way too hard. Ive worn the slots off my last 2 pairs of DBA's. :S. ALso, on a side note, Id like to say Im 21 today, and get off my P plates, and as such, stop being such an easy target for cops! Woo Hoo!

damn ... you wore the rotors out in 22km ... you should stop riding the brakes on steep downhills ... maybe stop using the brake pedal as a foot rest too.
hee hee Just kidding though. I would have expected they'd last a lot longer than that ... mine last set were on a car for at least 70,000km (factory rotors) ... but it depends when they were replaced before I bought the ute. The ute gets a hell of a lot of brake work as well when towing and load carrying ... and that's in Sydney city driving as well. So I am not gentle on them ... I try to be though ... but they do get a hard time.

I found a problem with premium rotors when I got mine and found that the pads were not allowed to withdraw from the rotor after application and continually rubbed the rotor. Mine wore way below minimum thickness in 45000km. Ford wont admit it's a design fault because they are like all manufacturers (A***holes)
I fixed it by going to Bendix Advance pads which are softer but wont fade under pressure and don't install the rubber in the spring clip on the pad if this is the brakes you have. It puts too much pressure on the clip, without they withdraw nicely and you dont get excess travel or any other nasties. |

Thanks for the reply everyone. Given that Ford replaced the disks first I'll probably get the car taken back to them to get a second opinion (local mech said that the disks need replacing).

My Fat Monty Ghia AU 1 stil has the original rotors after 280K, should last at least another 100K, pads o the other hand???
The secret; Dont waste your money on expencive hard racing pads, when you can get cheap (around 30 bucks a pair), soft pads, which grip like a mo-fo from cold and being soft, protect the rotors... The downside, overheated very quickly on standard 16" ghia wheels (which have a plastic plate on back to hold back the dust), however, no problems with 17x8" Holotypes, pads last around 50k front, 100k rear and lots of brakedust... Gotta clean the rims at least once a week!!! BTW most driving is freeway and country, with little or no stop/ start!!! |

I got 120km thousand at of my frist set of pads & i change the rotors at the same time with some life left in them. I'll went DBA sloted & never look back.

Tried RDA"cant handle heat" standard rotors they lasted 30000kms then went to DBA slotted and EBC black stuff pads.
The Rotors are up for a machine after 40000kms of good hard driving and the pads well im going to bendix as im sick and tired of the brake dust after two days of NORMAL driving.
