I'm thinking about changing my grill in the future, never done it before. How easy is it to remove and install a new one? (My car is a series 1 sedan, low bonnet) It looks really easy, but it could be deceiving. :P

4 clips and a flat blade screwdriver ... pop all of them and it will slide forward and out. Oh there might be a Phillips head screw or 2 at the top (undo them first though)
That's on my AUII ute ... I have done mine several times now.

Hmm... Can't see the clips having a quick check. Are series 1s different with this too? They did a hell of a lot with just a couple of series updates!

There's 2 tabs at the base of the grill next to the headlights ... wide and flat ... can even use your fingers to hold the tabs down as you slide the grille forward.
Undo the top screws at the radiator support and lean the grill forward ... you should be able to see straight down and see the clips. My AUII ute uses a low series grille (like AUI). Sorry I have no pics of it ... that I can think of.

Had a look at the workshop thread ... my grille is the exact same as yours as the XLS used the S-pac grille from the AUI.

Ahh sorry, didn't realise. Thanks for the help! I have to pull the tabs up first yes? As the screws won't come undone otherwise.

The self tapper plastic screws are crap ... you need to undo them first really ... pulling slightly as you undo them ... they should pop out ... well ... they should.
Then the grille should come out from the top a bit for you to reach inside to undo the clips. You might be able to reach through the lower holes in the grille to get to the clips as well ... if you have thin fingers too.

You push the bottom metal clips DOWN and slide grill out
also make sure you take out both bits of the top screw things not just the centre part that unscrews. |

Bloody hell, got the tabs underneath off. But those screws are an absolute ! They won't unscrew no matter what. Any help?

get a screwdriver and try pulling them out without screwing. They have a sleeve that expands slightly when the screw goes in. I can usually get a finger underneath and push the screw out then pull the sleeve bit out

You must have fingers of steel Ken! I cannot push those screws through AT ALL! This is immensely frustrating. Any other alternative I can use to get these B@$TARDS out?

Try a pocketknife, thin screwdriver, anything sharp to lever the screw up a bit and then sometimes they will start "screwing"
If not just lever it out The small scrivet type ones are even worse, half the car is held together by them |

After 20 minutes of non-stop levering I have ONE out.
Either I am doing this completely wrong or I got some REALLY dodgy screws.

once you have mastered the art of removing these scrivets you'll be fine. i use a pocket knife blade..slip it under the centre head and gently wriggle it up and pull it out. the sleeve will now be able to be removed.. once you have them all out you will see the two clips mechan1c was refering to. it's really quite easy once you figure it out, it'll only take 2 minutes next time.

jeez dont try removing the mud guards then LOL
trick is once they come out slightly get the flat blade screw driver under it and rip it out...dont bother trying to keep unscrewing, this may help for next time, when you put them back squeeze the expander bit (peice the screw screws into) together makes it tighter for the thread to screw into helps removing them next time
