I have an AU II Falcon XL Ute, The CD player has packed it in so i want to replace it with a new one.. Can someone please tell me if there are other Head Units on the market (if so which ones) will work with the controls on my steering wheel. Or do i just go to FORD and order a genuine? :
Before it started playing up i put a set of Kenwood 7"x10" 320W speakers in the space behind the seats. I also fitted a bass reflex port 50mm Diameter x 125mm long. This also connected to a Kenwood 2ch x 100w AMP , Really makes the difference when trying to get a little extra bass without loosing the storage room. :the_finge I am yet to replace those crappy bloody 5" x 7" Cardboard speakers in the doors. Anyone got any ideas to what sort of speakers? Either Splits or 3 way??? |

If the dollars are no prob, I suggest that you find a good quality double DIN unit. I got quoted $699 for a Kenwood unit from the guys at WOW Sight and Sound up here, which I'll more than likely pick up once I have new wheels and new exhaust system.
If not, just grab whatever tickles your fancy and stick either a stacker (do they fit in the second DIN slot?) or get a spacer put into it.

Many brands have 6-8 CD stacker units that fit in a single DIN slot, and have adaptors to work with the steering wheel controls for the AU. Blaupunkt and Alpine are two that come to mind, but there are others.

If you're not going to amplify them, Pioneer 5x7 150W should do. If you're going to amp them, I like the Fusion component (5x7 mid plus 32mm tweeter) speakers. Panda

Speakers: Listed in rough price order
Aerpro APS57 @ around $20 - $25. They are better than standard but that's about it. Kicker 05ES68 @ $99 JBL GTO8626 @ $129 Pioneer TSA 5713 @ $149 Clarion SRC5715 @ $149 (Use Quick Product Search to search on SRC5715) Boston S85 @ US$120 (approx $160) Polk Audio DB570 @ US$120 (approx $160) JL Audio TR570-CXi @ $189 and the ZR570-CSi (Special order) @ $1489 pair - not a misprint!! Boston NX87 @ US$180 (approx $240) JBL P75 @ $249.00. Clif Designs PX5.7 @ $249.00. Phoenix Gold TX57.0COAX @ $249.00. Polk Audio MMC570 @ US$200 (approx $265) Blaupunkt TSx 573 (couldn't get a price for these) Rockford Fosgate T682S/T1682S this is a 6x8 which apparently fits in the 5x7 space - somehow. Couldn't find a price easily. Infinity REF6810CS this is a 6x8 but lists 5x7 as well!?! No price. Eclipse SE8375 No price. Alpine SPR-571A No price. Alpine SPR-57LS & SPR-57LP No price. I have the Pioneer and am very happy with them. Also, most 6" and some 6.5" speakers will also fit in the 5x7 holes in the doors and parcel shelf, but obviously you would need to drill new screw holes to mount them and you need to be sure they are not too deep. I had a pair of 6.5" US Audio speakers in the front of my AU1 XR6.

Head Unit:
Autobarn advertised a new gadget (called a CATS adapter) in their latest catalogue for VY-VZ commodores to run the steering wheel controls for Sony, Kenwood, pioneer or Clarion (I'm guessing these are the brands they stock) head unit that operates off a remote. They also say it is available for other cars, but I haven't had a chance yet to check if the AU is on that list. If it is, then you can buy any head unit you want (as long as it has a remote), and for an extra $199, you can run the steering wheel controls. Here's a pic of their catalogue with some details:
