Default All AU clockprings the same?

I've recently done a clockspring and after being told by Ford that they don't have any left and can't get any, and not finding any new online, have resorted to wreckers and managed to find a few, but none of them were from XR8s.

I noticed the part numbers on the clocksprings I've found are different to the part number I got off Ford. Is this going to be an issue? And are the clocksprings different between six cylinder and eight cylinder? Wouldn't imagine there would be a difference, as it would be more related to steering wheel controls (as well as the airbag obviously)?

I checked carefully and decided they were all compatible where they looked the same. Put one from a standard sedan into an XR6 and had no problems.

Thanks fellas, good to know. Will sort it out tomorrow.

Realise it would be a very outside chance of happening, but been driving around on eggshells waiting for the airbag to blow up in my face with the airbag light flashing (code 32).

This forum to the rescue again. Invaluable info here.

What's better about the upgraded one? AND where on earth can you get one?

Wreckers would be your best option ask for the 1R23-14A664-AA numbered one or Ebay or Gumtree for a New Old Stock one AU2-14A664-A

Not sure what the improvement I would say the series 1 would have had some issues

Now with prefix of the engineering number it shows product changes - the new type of numbering from around this period is now a world wide system

WR2A

W = 1998
R2 = Falcon
A = Product Engineering may be Electrical division

1R23

1 = 2001
R2 = Falcon
3 = Product Engineering - Luxury

14A664 = Clock Spring or Air Bag Contact

The last 2 Letters

AA & AB = The product engineering changes / improvements - but these wouldn’t be known to the general public this would be a FoMoCo need to know thing

Hope this helps.....

Was it possibly a shift to Mylar tape ribbons? The WR2A was definitely vinyl insulated wire ribbon.

Could be, the series 1 clock spring engineering number shows it’s had 2 improvements hence the AB letters obviously for what ever reason they changed it again in series 2 and from the AA letters they sorted it out
