For someone who confesses and pleads guilty - then i see no danger in removing life from their body. The 0.001% chance that they get it wrong is too great IMO.

With todays technology the proof is becoming more tangable, but I hear you. But I keep asking myself, why are we keeping Martin Bryant alive? The corby murderers? What more proof is needed?

As I hear you. And i agree that there are certain cases which really dont leave a shred of doubt. It's not the death penalty per-se that i dont agree with... its the implementation of it which concerns me I guess...

Just heard on another forum that the guy was apparently already aquitted of a similar offence 2 years ago. (just saw that 4Vman has already posted this)

If this is true it definitely verifies muppets story that too many people are getting let off. Sad fact is I doubt our justice system will be changing any time soon.

What a tragedy - very sad for the family and the whole community

Very valid points (on the whole) have been made through this thread. However, since many of us will never have input into the death penalty or changing laws etc. I think we should all take this terrible event (which is not unlike many other similar crimes that have always happened within the human race) and change what we can. Love every day, treat people with respect, try to encourage positivity in people so that you may have a positive impact - maybe even stopping someone from becoming the criminal they could be.

And if there is a referendum, try to see yourself in others' shoes, and gather as many facts as you can. If we all succumbed to our animal urges (hate, revenge, sexual depravity etc.) then I would bet that our communities would be worse off!

Nothing ever get's done to deter these type of people from doing such evil and there are the minority that wants these sort of people to have a second chance.

Just makes me mad cause this guy will probably be in prison for 10 years and that's it.

This ***** should be locked in his cell till the day he dies, then he'd wish there was capital punishment.

Slightly off topic, i was talking to a truck driver that delivers goods to a high security prison, he was held up one day while his truck was searched, when asked why, he was told a screwdriver had gone missing, on returning a few weeks later, he asked if the screwdriver had been found, the answer was yes, "we found it in a pedophile" it seems in jail, real justice is done, it just doesnt make the news.

There are crimes that demand the death penalty, this is one of them.

some times the barbaric laws of a previous time should be bought back in , public stoning , will help the families deal with the grief & deter others!

Should we run a pole on this?

Did you see the guy on the news, he is 21, looks like he is 15, and the police can not tell us what happened to that poor kid because what he did was so horrific.

The taking of a life is a serious matter.... And when a state does it, it takes on a whole new perspective. I would never support a system like china has for eg. BUT, I think we have the rite to remove these "animals" from the gene pool. IF this little **** is proven guilty, why shouldn't we dispose of him. Hell, I'll pul the lever if no one else will!!

Sadly, any poll we run here counts for squat. What we need is a poll of the people. Also sadly is the current incumbents (both sides) will not give us our say on this, they think that they know better.

Simple question, Could Australia benefit by having the death penality in some murder cases.......???

I picked up on that too.

He said he has seen plenty of things in his time but he can't begin to explain what happened in the toilet.

Guys I didn't read every post....but heres the guts of what is going to happen he will get life or longer(natural life).

He will be in protective custody.....but it seems that some elements of prison life have a way of getting to those that are like him.

Trust me he will be in living hell till either a screw gets him or another prisoner......

What's life? 10 years and then parole?

No such thing as life sentences anymore, unless you murder multiple people and re-offend then your given a indefinate period.

Life should mean LIFE, not out in 10 years etc.

Brian..I can't answer the main thrust of your post...'what do you tell your children'

I can however vouch for the rest of my post HE WILL SUFFER.

Yes the average aussie is a bit tired of this sort of crime and the sentencing handed out....but think about this many an honest man has been sent to jail for telling the truth....and many an honest man has been setup by coppers as the fallguy just to add to their collar count.

To invoke the death penalty one must be absolutly positive beyond any doubt that they are guilty.

Not an easy ask!!!!

the more i hear about this case, the worse it gets. i really hope that this guy wasnt let off for a similar crime two years ago...it would make the whole mess even worse for the family knowing that their little girl could still be alive and healthy if he was behind bars. i sincerely hope this pr!ck dies a very slow and very painful death. i hope he enjoys his time in prison where child rapists and killers are treated with the respect they deserve.
