Jakarta - road rules - none, actual roads - very few, offroad shuffle - often. Speeding fines? Never get fast enough to get pinged for them.

For absolute shockers, drive in a foreign city that was built when noah was a boy and where they drive on the opposite side of the road, somewhere like Rome. Now that is bad....

Pretty much all of the east of Australia, London, Paris, Nice, Geneva, Marseilles,Corsica, Germany and all over UK.
Australia definately has the tightest driving rules....my missus made me calm down when I first arrived in Sydney- couldn't believe how slow we have to drive on open roads! One funny thing in the UK that doesn't work here is if you are in the fast lane and the person in front doesn't move over, you indicate to the right as if to pas them and they generally realise that you want to pass rather than just following. This is great because you don't have to tailgate folk so they get the message-much safer.

I'm hearing you Nairobi peak hour rates as one of the most petrifying of my life. They have these mad taxis that duck in and out and the only time they stop is if they crash... then you have traffic delays. There are no rules it seems... |

Rome - I learnt to drive a volvo into places that you wouldn't think a volvo would fit
London - I remember one sunday driving a friends combi from one side to the other and it kept on stalling! Paris - this was interesting - I had my right foot in plaster and we were driving an english car Monte Carlo (actually anywhere along the French Rivera - even worse during the film festival or the race) Manila - TOTAL FREAKS ON THE ROAD!!!!! Nairobi - hmmmmm nuts and I was with locals! Actually strangest place to drive is Calais, just after you've gotten off the ferry and you have to remember to start driving on the wrong side of the road!

Last year i was driving around Baghdad, that was pretty crazy. Big holes in the roads from vehicle bombers and roadside bombs, and arabs trying to drive. It feels better with a automatic machine gun in the ready , you dont get many of them tailgating when they see that. Oh and no speed limits thats a bonus too.

Biggest city is NewYork city & cost a fourtune in toll fares. I got lost in peak hour traffic in Washington DC for hours & most dangerous city I've driven through is Gary Indianna south east of Chicago.

About 6 years ago the streets of Bali seem like a nightmare on first impressions, considering that really the only road rule is to "give way to anything bigger than you",. which is a lot of things if you're on a scooter
As for Melbourne, I've been here my whole life and never had to do a hook turn, with the city being a grid layout if you can get your way around without having to do them. Sydney was a shocker though, exits and entrances everywhere, signs every 50m, and concrete walls! Hobart is bad for 1-way streets |

1. London. Total waste of a hire car unless your travelling throughout UK. Use the tube/bus, much better.
2. L.A. congested, but car friendly. Keep clear of seedy suburbs though. 3. New York. Not as bad as I thought, just pick your travel time well. 4. Washington D.C. traffic so bad, it makes plucking nose hair fun. Cities I have been driven in:- Buenos Aires Rio Man, you can see where all the motor racing talent comes from in South America. We had one cabby feeding on opposite lock, tyres squealing on a curved freeway on ramp....

We went around Europe in a 9 seater minibus. Pretty sure we got stuck on this road and had to reverse..
![]() Rome and Milan are pretty nerve racking. Dubai would have to be the worst. Petrol is as cheap as redskins, so why wouldn't they have the biggest engines they can, and why wouldn't they speed around the huge straight roads. They reckon one person gets killed each day on the main highway, just trying to cross the road. |

The biggest city I have ever driven in is Brisbane because I'm only 18. But I have been in buses and the like through New York City, now that was just ridiculous...

Biggest I've driven in is Melbourne but I bypassed the city and took the Western Ring Rd and Westgate Fwy to St.Kilda then to the Spirit of Tas terminal. So I didn't really drive in the city itself, does that count?
