What are your thoughts on Castrol Magnatec?
Both my AU's are on gas. GK

Thats all i've been using in my AU since i got it a year ago. Seems to do the job. I used to use penrite hpr 15w-40 that was good too.

Magnatec was used by us for the GT but since we changed to Caltex oils I am not sure what they are using. Ford has a LPG oil and as far as I know is Mobil?
The taxi drivers we get at work all swear by Penzoil? Hard to tell sometimes? so many experts recommending so many different oils? Puzzling... |

Dont bother with it GK, ive used Magnatec (its OK stuff for the price $22) before but i found Penrite to be better stuff and considering your on LPG, id try different stuff.
Either use Penrite HPR10 GAS (it can be to thin if youve got some mileage on it) or go down to your nearest Ford D'ship and grab some Ford 15/40 LP Gas- They always have it in stock and its around $28. Ive also used Castrol Gas oil and found it to be a bit dodgy.

Magnatec appears to be thinner than it's grading. Almost like water. When I used it i got a light top end rattle.
Now run Penzoil 10-30 it's called eco something. Much better, no noises. The ford oil is good too, not really expensive either.

Last oil change that I did I shopped around and Magnatec was recommended for gas. I went to Repco and priced it and checked out other oils they had and eventually bought Mobil Super LPG mainly for the price. It was on special for $15.00 so I bought 2 of them. The oil seems to be ok. Says on the back of the pack that it is "suitable for vehicles running on gasoline making it ideal duel fuel passenger car engine oil". I haven't really noticed any unusual noises from the engine.

Cheers for the replies fellas!
I might check out the Mobil and Shell gas range. You guys are not the first to point out that Castrol oils seem thinner than what the viscosity says. Magnatec is pretty watery when I take it out of the car! I now have about 4 5litre containers of it, no worries though, I have the receipt from SuperCheap, I'll exchange it tomorrow. Just done the 150,000 change on the wagon last Saturday! Darn it, LOL! GK

Does anyone know why thw AU1 had thinner oil than the 2 and 3? I think it says 5/30 on the oil cap.

However, I just checked the owners manual, and they are still recommending the 10/30 if available, and if not, then a 40 or 50 grade oil. Interesting though, the S1 manual says that 50 grade oil should be used for gas, and to refer to the gas supplement. I looked there and found that it said that "No special oil is required. The standard Ford oil specification is satisfactory." So what oil to use? My gas mechanic today said that Magnatec was fine, but I've noticed that when I change the oil in the wagon, 150,000kms, there is a few litres missing after the 10,000 kays. I think I'll go to a 10/50 shell. That is if they make one, perhaps the 15/50 semi synthetic will suffice. I'll check out their site now. *GK surfs the information superhighway!* Ok, Shell Helix Plus is one they recommend, it comes in 3 viscosities 10/30, 10/40 and 10/50. Magnatec is 10/40 and come out at the end of the 10,000 pretty watery, I wouldn't mind the 10/50 as the wagon has done 150,000 kays. The SR however, has only just been put on gas, and only done 80,000 kays. I reckon, the 15/50 for the Wagon and the 10/40 for the sedan. What is the view on this? Or just go the 10/40 for each? GK

I use Magnatec in mine, at just over 150,000km it doesnt use any, but I change it after 5000km's. I get a little lifter noise on a warm start thats about it. My cars on gas too.
Ive also tried Penrite HPR10 and Nulon fully synthetic 10w40 both seemed to sound the same and come out looking pretty similar |

*Thinking thinking* I will take the Magnatec back tomorrow and have a try of something else. We'll see how it goes, I don't really want to change oil every 5,000kays, but that's me! LOL! GK

I use HPR 10 in the straight petrol wagon, and in the dual fuel XR8.

I used to use magnatec but after 150,000 i noticed it started using a little bit of oil. Switched to penrite hpr 15 semi synth and now the motors alot quieter and uses no oil. Stuck with it after the gas conversion and no drama's. All hell would break loose if l went the recommended 5w.

I'll give it a go. I still have 1 container of Magnatec left (after I exchange the other 4!) and I'll put that into the wagon after 5,000 kays, which will take me up to the 10,000 kay mark. Thanks fellas. Funny thing, I used to use Penrite oil in my Norton motorbike many years ago, my brother used it in his Harleys. We noticed it was more viscous than the other brands. We both ride Honda's now! LOL! GK

But the thing that i like most about it was that they have 2 inbuilt valves one for bypass which doesnt ever let the engine starve of oil even when it's very low and also anti drainback valve which keeps the oil in the motor on every start up!!!! So far i am very impressed that my oil is still like new after 2months. |

I run the Shell LPG 15W40 oil.
it does it's job ... but i drop it and renew it once a month .. as that's 5000km worth of Sydney metro driving. So it never get dirty ... and looks identical in colour to what goes back in ... hee hee.
