My car needs power steering fluid in it. Neither the service manual or gregories is helping me.
I have some Titan ATF 3000 dx 2 and ATF type f in my shed. Will either of these work? |

Power steer fluid is the same as your trans fluid.
But power steer systems really aren't very picky about the type of ATF used - just about anything wet and red will do. Chuck either in I say.

Valvoline make a fluid that has an AU XR8 on the front of the bottle! Couldn't go wrong with such a product! LOL!
Check your book for the specification and I guess you could then check the specs of the tranny fluid. I guess they'd match if it were okay? GK

You should use Mobilfluid 424. Available at any mobil servo or 7 eleven. If you run dextron or other trans fluid the little pressure switch on the rack will continually fail and leak through the top electrical connector and your end rack seals will leak faster than usual. Same goes for BA/ EF AU2. The fluid is clear and not red. You notice a definite change in pump sound when you use it over dextron. Turning the steering wheel when running dextron the pump has that definitive whining sound. When running mobilfluid 424 the pump is almost dead silent on the whine sound when turning the wheel.

Ford R1-424 is now ONR. However it was repackaged by Exxon-Mobile for Ford.
It is still available from Mobile suppliers but it is now renamed as Mobilefluid 428. This fluid is used as the hydraulic fluid by several tractor and dozer manufacturers. Beware that using tranny fluid can have adverse effects on the seals used in the steering rack, power steering pump and various "O" rings. The parts guy I deal with at my local Ford dealer advised me that the only dealer still showing any stock of R1-424 is Hidden Valley Ford in Darwin. They now have only 4 X 1 Ltr containers left. |

hi
Always use specified fluid for specific equipment . The specifics for each application can never be assumed Automatic trans ---specific coolant hybrid /OATS / old school basic glycol / real old corrosion inhibitor eng petrol or diesel DPF =yes or no ...2 stroke /4stroke ..viscosity based on ambient Power steer generally in a modern car has small capacity and runs hot Synthetic is to reduce oil breaking down when specified Gear oil based or trans fluid based ,,NEVER EVER MIX THE 2 Specific additive fluid types Ford do superceed their fluids ,, and charts do exist but not common . I accessed the USA charts by accident for gear box charts Some fluids are backwards compatible some are not . If Ford is not messy enough local Australian oil companies invent there only versions . ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In different applications you need to track the Ford approval numbers from the originally installed oil .. |
