Default Chrome Gear Selector Surround

Hi Guys,

Changed over the gear selector surround on the SR today. Looks really good and an easy mod. Cheap too! $12.80!

I bought 2 of course, to do the Series 1 as well. Actually I tried the Series 1 first, but couldn't do it.

The bit that can be replaced on the S2-3 doesn't come apart on the S1! Bugger I thought, well off to the forum to post for ideas!

How do I do this mod on the Series 1? Do I have to cut the grey surround away? Do I have to purchase another bit as well, ala Series 2?

Has anyone done the mod on a Series 1?

Your help is always appreciated!

GK

GK, are you saying that the chrome surround was only $12.50? Where did you get it. Surly thats not Ford price.

I got mine for $9.80 trade.

GK - as per PM, you will need the lower section of the AU2 surround assembly. I'm guessing, but it should be no more than $20. Try FTG as well as Ford - they may even swap for your series one surround.

Now if it was only that easy for the chrome button and the chrome gear stalk, we will all be laughing.

I have a ghia surround with the chrome, but the chrome is sort of bubbling near the econ button and scratched. Does the faux woodgrain bit come apart from the chrome bit in all series, or is it like with the grey and it doesn't in series 1? My car is a series one, but I have no idea what series the woodgrain/chrome bit is, I got it from FTG. If someone knows the answer it'll save me taking out the whole centre console to no avail! Cheers, Matt.

I'm not sure Matt. I think it should come apart though, as when at Ford ordering the bits I need to make the mod work, looking at the screen suggested that the woodgrain bits were series 2 items.

Post us a pic to have a geezer at!

That item is listed as a "lens" and is around $20. Mine were ok, but I would have replaced them if they were cheaper. Don't know the part number sorry!

BTW, about 10 mins ago I finished the install of the second chrome surround and I've taken pics. I'll post a how to do thread shortly!

The chrome surround was $13 and the outer housing was $14. Of course the outer housing is only needed on the series 1, low series for sure, not sure about high series though. I assume it's for both.

Nice and cheap, just the way I like it.

BTW, the how to with pics is now posted in my GK's FUTURA WAGON workshop thread.

Here's the link.

Turns out the woodgrain and the chrome bit are seperate (of course). I was worried they might be glued together, but I think it was just 8 years of crap that was holding them together. Took it out, cleaned it up, put the new chrome on and it looks like new. Only cost me 11 dollars something for the chrome here in brissy too!
Just a tip too, instead of buying a new lens (the bit with P N D etc) get some stuff called DISPLEX, it's about 10 bucks for a little tube but it lasts for ages. It's made for removing scratches from mobile phone screens but it also brings stuff like the lens and instrument cluster perspex up like new if there's any scratches or marks on them. Brasso does a similar job, but I reckon displex is better. Be careful about getting it on dyed plastic though, I've heard it can take the colour out. Cheer, Matt.

The woodgrain bit is the expensive part of the setup unfortunately, about 85 bucks;
NU 7A306 B (HOUSING) - woodgrain part $77.43
NU 7A306 A (HOUSING) - chrome inner housing $9.70
AU 7E213 A (LENS TRANS CONTROL) - selector lens $16.16
Tack GST onto all those prices too, they're ex-GST.
Try FTG though, I got the whole setup for 50 bucks, not sure how regularly they come though though. Good luck!

S2 had the brushed nickel look and it was able to be changed. The S1 (low series at least, not sure of the high series) Couldn't be changed.

The S2 changeover I did was easy, the S1 mod needed a bit from the series 2. The part numbers are at the start of the thread. If yours is a S2, you only need the chrome surround!
